Acupuncture is the practice of inserting very thin needles along the meridians to stimulate specific organs and to balance the circulation of qi and blood. The acupuncture points are located where the qi (or energy) of the channels rises close to the surface of the body.
There are 12 main meridians—six yin, six yang, and numerous minor ones—that form a network of channels throughout the body. When qi flows freely through the meridians, the body is balanced and healthy. But if the energy becomes blocked, stagnated, or weak, this can lead to physical, mental, or emotional illness. To balance the qi in the body, the acupuncturist stimulates specific acupuncture points that restore the body’s energy system and help to treat and prevent disease.
Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the immune system. It also effects the circulation, blood pressure, rhythm and stroke of the heart, gastric secretions, and production of red and white cells. Furthermore, it stimulates the release of a variety of hormones that help the body to respond to injury and stress.
